Junior Sailing Essentials: What Kids Need to Start

Getting your child started in sailing is exciting, but preparation is essential for safety and enjoyment. Junior sailors need gear that fits correctly, is comfortable, and allows freedom of movement.

A properly fitted junior PFD or lifejacket is the most important item. Examples such as the Zhik Active PFDs  offer buoyancy, comfort, and safety, designed specifically for young sailors. Adjustable straps ensure a snug fit for different body shapes and sizes.

Clothing should be lightweight, quick-drying, and sun-protective. A UV top or rash vest under a lightweight sailing smock keeps young sailors comfortable while protecting their skin. Sailing shorts or pants should allow freedom of movement for trimming, and maneuvering around the boat.

A 'skiffsuit' wetsuit designed specifically for sailing is ideal, or a combination of wetsuit top, and/or shorts or pants. Sailing wetsuits have padding and abrasion resistant material in the right areas.

Gloves and dinghy boots help protect hands and feet. Gloves reduce friction from ropes, and dinghy boots prevent slips and scrapes.

For personal items, a small waterproof bag keeps phones or snacks safe. A lightweight sailing helmet or bump cap provides added protection for head impacts.

By equipping young sailors with the right gear, their introduction to sailing is safe, comfortable, and fun. With the right PFD, helmet, gloves, and clothing, kids can focus on learning, playing, and enjoying the water confidently.
